It’s a sobering thought: a Malawian farmer would need to sell 90kgs of rice at a fair price to pay for his child to attend high school for just one year.

To put that figure into perspective, Just Trading Scotland has launched the 90kg Rice Challenge, with churches, schools and other community groups up and down the country challenged to sell every last gram.

Nearly 200 groups have so far taken up the challenge, buying rice from Just Trading Scotland for £2.50/kg (transport paid) and promoting the scheme through PowerPoint presentations, posters, leaflets and information sheets.
