News: Japanese visitors among the guests at Thanet’s Fairtrade Supper at Quex Barn
2 March, 2011
More than a dozen Japanese students added a taste of the Orient to Thanet Fairtrade Initiative’s annual Fairtrade Supper.
Around 60 people turned out for the event, which was held last night (Tuesday, March 1) at Quex Barn, near Birchington.
They enjoyed a delicious three course meal prepared by top chef Robin and his highly-skilled team, with roast beef, sea bass and pigeon among the tasty items on the menu.
The special guest, Mineo Kageya, director of Japan in Fairtrade Towns, spoke about his plans to achieve Japan’s first Fairtrade Town this year and introduced his students, all of whom are from the Tokyo area.
Three of them wore kimonos – beautiful, traditional Japanese garments that are handed down from generation to generation – especially for the event.
Guests at the supper also heard from Clare Pollard, schools liaison officer for Thanet Fairtrade Initiative, about the students’ work with youngsters at four primary schools in Thanet, including St Laurence-in-Thanet Junior School, Ramsgate, where children have been learning about origami and calligraphy. Pupils are also making their own version of the popular Japanese card game karuta.
Tammy Stewart-Jones, founder of Thanet Fairtrade Initiative, officially launched the 2011 Thanet Fairtrade Island Guide, while Martin Jefferies, secretary, spoke about the importance of Fairtrade cotton and Fairtrade chocolate.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Ramsgate, Cllrs David and Elizabeth Green, also attended the event.
